First full screen version of The First Circle, the novel by Nobel Prize Winning Alexander Solzhenitsyn.
The film discloses the times of repression and exilement to concentration camps, times of fear and horror, times of Stalin's blood-spilling regime.
Paranoid and vicious, Stalin arrested and exiled both common people and brilliant scientists. Thus, the dictator decided to create special camps for scientists, called Sharashkas, in order to make them work for prosperity of the USSR.
Sharashka prisoners were regulary fed and enjoyed basic working conditions. Many of them faced a grave moral dilemma, as they were assigned to maintain prosperity of the system that had already caused so much suffering and grief to citizens.
